Salesian Father Ralph Murphy, who served various Salesian assignments in the Bay Area, died July 14 at age 87. He was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and moved with his family to California in 1935. He made his religious profession with the Salesians in 1946. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree at Don Bosco College in Newton, N.J., he was ordained a priest in 1956. He later graduated with a master’s degree in English at Dominican University in San Rafael. His first assignment after ordination was as dean of students of Salesian Junior Seminary, now Salesian High School. During the 1960s and 1970s, Father Murphy served at Salesian High School, and as director of the Salesian Boys Club, both in Los Angeles. From 1984 through 1989, he worked as the treasurer in Richmond, and through 1998 he was the treasurer at Don Bosco Hall in Berkeley. Afterward he held different assignments at the provincial house in San Francisco. A year ago, he returned to Los Angeles, and for the last six months was cared for at Nazareth House there.
